• Carter: Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and winner of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, died Sunday at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, the Carter Center said. The longest-lived American president served from January 1977 to January 1981.

• The Nobel Peace Prize was handed to human rights activists from Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia for their efforts in fighting authoritarian regimes. Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian civil rights group Memorial, and Ukraine’s Center for Civil Liberties shared the award. The Nobel Committee praised the new laureates for their “outstanding effort to document war crimes, human rights abuses, and the abuse of power.”
